There’s so much more to do than just lying under the sun.
What comes to mind when you hear the word ‘Cyprus’? Sun, sand and sea, probably! While the island is known for its incredibly clean beaches, there’s so much more to do than just lying under the sun. In fact, there are numerous things that make Cyprus unique, yet perfect for just about any traveller!
Let’s start with snow (we bet that wasn’t on your list of things you associate with Cyprus)! The Troodos Mountain Range is home to Mount Olympus, the highest point on the island (at 1,952 metres) and a perfect location for skiing during winter months. But that doesn't mean the mountains aren't worth visiting if you're in Cyprus during the summer. In fact, tourists and locals like to head up the mountains when they feel like taking a break from the scorching heat at sea level, with a walk through one of the many scenic nature trails to admire the wonderful scents, aromas and waterfalls. Sure, nature trails are common in popular holiday destinations, but what makes the Troodos mountains truly unique is their geology. It's one of the few places in the world where the earth's oceanic crust can be examined without having to go to the sea, and as a result of the underwater volcanic eruption that formed the island, pillow lava can be found throughout the mountains!
If the scientific side of the island doesn't appeal to you, we're sure you'll appreciate the rich history that is scattered around Cyprus. As a matter of fact, it's quite hard to plan a holiday to Cyprus that doesn't involve some kind of historical site that's been carefully preserved! Evidence of 10,000 years of civilization can be found around the island, from the Tombs of the King's that were used as a cemetery to the elite, to archeological sites that contain ancient artwork. To top it off, there are three UNESCO World Heritage Sites - the Painted Churches in the Troodos Region, Choirokoitia and the entire city of Paphos!
If nature is more your thing, a hike on the island will give you the chance to spot some unique or endangered species of plants and animals. In Cyprus, you’re never too far from a national forest park, zoo or an aquarium where you can appreciate the island’s incredible wildlife. Let’s take the Troodos National Forest Park, for example, there are ten nature trails to choose from where you might spot ravens, vultures and eagles as well as twelve plant species that can’t be found anywhere else in Cyprus! Or if you prefer sea life, you might want to visit the Marine Turtle Conservation Project that aims to protect green and loggerhead turtles, which are endangered and vulnerable.
Of course, nothing can make or break a holiday than the local cuisine of your destination. Thankfully, Cyprus offers a range of mouthwatering foods that make use of a traditional mix of herbs, spices, olive oil and fresh local ingredients. In fact, Cypriot food is considered by many to be the healthiest cuisine in the world! Home cooking is still a strong tradition in Cyprus with traditional recipes that have been passed down generations but dining out in Cypriot restaurants offers an unforgettable experience with popular dishes like Souvlaki, Sheftalia and Afella!
Typically, Cyprus is seen as just another one of those destinations for old, retired couples, but with so many things to see and activities to take part in, it definitely deserves a place on everyone’s bucket list! With that being said, it’s still the perfect location for anyone who is looking to put their feet up and tan on a beach!
