May was the official date that overseas leisure travel to certain countries could start again.
The month of May brings some sunshine into our lives in more ways than usual this year. This time it’s because of all the exciting things we’ve been able to do in the second half of the month. The 17th of May was the official date that overseas leisure travel to certain countries could start again, so if you’ve been waiting for the chance to get a good tan in, then now’s your time! Countries like Portugal and Cyprus have already been talking about how excited they are to welcome tourists back to their shores, but we do all have to remember that the new way we will have to travel will not be the same as before.
The first barrier for travel to Cyprus will be a vaccine, and that will also depend on which vaccine you have received. The government of Cyprus is working closely with the European Medicines Agency, and so the vaccines that will make a traveller eligible for entry are those approved by the EMA, which at the moment are the Pfizer-BioNTech, Oxford-AstraZeneca and Moderna jabs. Cyprus has already come to an agreement with Israel on this and will be allowing travellers from Israel with a certificate showing no infection and vaccination, a plan which Cyprus currently hopes to apply to other nations.
As with what seems like everything to do with the Coronavirus pandemic, none of the plans are set in stone and everyone is working with the best info they can find. The British government recently announced the three tiers of countries, with green being the safest and red the worst, with Cyprus finding itself in the middle in amber. The Cypriot government hopes to get itself into the green as soon as possible to make travelling as easy as possible, but it all rests on factors like new variants and the effectiveness of Cyprus’ vaccination programme.
Even when we can get ourselves back onto the planes, the way we travel is going to be very different. Certain countries and airlines will ask for tests before even getting to the airport, and face coverings will be a must on every flight for some time. When you’re in the country, the lockdown might be at a different stage to home, so not everything you expect to be open will be open. Cyprus has recently taken its first steps out of the April emergency lockdown, with outdoor hospitality and shopping open, but an 11pm curfew for the whole country. So, dinners are back on, but the nights out might have to wait.
Let’s get back to doing the things we love to do, but safely. Cyprus and Paphos are taking all the steps to welcome you back with open arms, but there still has to be an effort from every traveller to keep themselves and everyone else safe and sound. If all goes according to plan, then it’s less than a month until we’ll be welcoming you to the Jewel of the Mediterranean. If not, then we’re more than happy to wait some time to ensure safety for all the travellers looking to discover Paphos. What is a month or so between friends and fellow explorers anyway?
