Wined & Dined: The Top 5 Cypriot Wines

Cypriots have finessed their grapes and created a tastebud-tingling variety of wine.

Selection of Cypriot Wines

Cypriot wines are considered one of the most ancient wines in the world. With production starting in 2000BC, it’s safe to say the Cypriots have finessed their grapes and created a tastebud-tingling variety of wine.

From wines created from indigenous grapes, to more global varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz, there are many available options to delight your palette.

If you’re looking to enjoy a glass of Cypriot wine at a restaurant, on the beach or on the balcony of your holiday apartment, we’ve devised a list of some of the top 5 Cypriot wines that you simply have to try – and we’ve got something for everyone!

1.     Commandaria

There’s no better-known Cypriot wine than Commandaria – a sweet dessert wine which is considered to be one of the oldest wines in the world. It’s produced by the local Cyprus grapes mavro and xinisteri and has caramel and cocoa aromas with flavours of raisins, figs and honey.

2.     Dafermou Rosé

The Dafermou Rosé wine comes from the rare and indigenous Maratheftiko variety, combined with the French Syrah variety. It’s a crisp, dry and well-balanced rosé which gives intense aromas of red fruits, strawberry and hints of wild rose and vanilla – a must-sip for the rosé lovers of the world.

3.     Kolios Persefoni

The Persefoni wine is a product of the Kolios family, which is produced on the wild, green mountain peaks at the highest village of Paphos, Statos-Agios Fotios. This white wine is available in dry or medium dry to cater to everyone’s tastes. Its subtle yet tasty aromas are enough to enthuse those who love white wines (and those who aren’t so keen).

4.     Tsangarides Mataro

Now a wine for those who enjoy darker tastes - the Tsangarides Mataro is aged for six months in French oak barrels. This wine offers a creamy, sweet taste with notes of vanilla, spice, raspberry, plum and caramel. As we move towards the winter months, this warm and subtle red wine is the perfect companion for those darker evenings in Cyprus.

5.     Vouni Panayia Alina

Vouni Panayia Alina is an easy-to-drink, fresh, dry white wine made with the indigenous grape Xynisteri. Its intense tropical taste is laced with aromas of citrus, melon, mango and white flowers and its fruity finish will have you gasping for another taste in the warm, Cypriot sun.
